We are very excited to introduce you to an artist that was recently added to our ‘Independent artist’ category: Bas Sebus.
Sebus (1961) studied medicine in Amsterdam. He is an autodidact and studied painting techniques (oil, tempera) from books from great painters such as Max Doerner and Xavier de Langlais. He developed a style that shows similarities with the technique of Dutch realistic painters. However, there is a difference in realism. The paintings which Sebus creates are composed on philosophical and literature sources, that result in paitings with an idea and a strong communicative character.
This quality shows a striking turn in fantasy in his paintings used as bookcovers for books produced by the dutch publishers Het Lemniscaat and De Wereldbibliotheek. Recognition by the artworld itself came with the twofold participation on the prestigious exhibition “Koninklijke Subsidie voor Vrije Schilderkunst” in the Royal Palace in Amsterdam and with the assignment of a governmental subsidy (basisstipendium).
Bas Sebus gave masterclasses in Amsterdam on the “Amsterdam Institute for Painting” next to members of the “After Nature” group (Peter Klashorst, Bart Domburg, Jurriaan van Hall) and painters like Siert Dallinga and Frans Fransiscus.
The work of Sebus is in great demand by private persons as well as by large companies. In 1999 he performed a big wallpainting in tempera for a family in Belgium and in the years thereafter he made big size panels for several restaurants on cruiseships from the “Holland Amerika Lijn”. His paintings can be found in several dutch company art collections.
